I found a nice, wood corner shelf on craigslist for $5. I was bad about taking "before" pictures this time around, so just imagine a light color wood with no design.
I stained the shelf with black stain (that I got for free at the recycling plant-see "places I go" page). When that was fully dry, I sprayed a glaze over the entire shelf.
After that dried, I cut triangles to match the four tiers of the shelf. I used some vintage scrapbook paper I already had. I mod podged the triangles to the shelf. Overall, I am happy with my results, I do wish I would have cut straighter lines on the triangles. Here's what I ended up with:
